Zero Waste Northeast Ohio

I would like to hear from those organizations who have set a goal of zero waste or those who are already there (or darn close!). E4S is hosting a first steps and best practices event and is looking for inspirational stories to share. Feel free to post here or contact me directly - 216-451-7755.

Event details:
Tuesday, Feb. 9th, 8:30-11 am
at NEORSD, 3900 Euclid Ave, Cleveland

Thanks!

When does this event look like it'll be scheduled and is this an event to help out new members of E4S? We haven't had any significant changes since the last time I shared our story but if everyone's not sick of hearing it I'd be happy to share Talan's story.

Annabel,

We are nearly zero waste except for non-recyclable frozen food boxes that one employee uses often... and other non-recyclable food packaging.

I'm happy to speak again per usual (veggie burger classic with mushrooms and organic heirloom cheese!) at the 2/9 mtg. at NEORSD.

Best,
Beau

Hi P.J.

You and others from APOC are welcome to attend this first steps event on 2/9. We did a similar event last year and I believe everyone walked away with at least one idea of how to reduce their waste stream. More details will be posted in the coming week.

Happy New Year Annabel. As you know, we set a zero waste goal and we are fairly close (90% diversion) at our Bedford factory. We have had the opportunity with a supplier to raise the issue of packaging materials because we were incurring UPS surcharcharges. Long story, short, our supplier redesigned its packaging which reduced the cardbord content by 25%. Consequently, the new dimensions eliminated the UPS surcharges. While we haven't diverted any additional waste (we were already recycling cardboard), this packaging change reduced the consumption of cardboard by our supplier and the handling of it by our employees. So it turned into a positive sustainability story because there is now less impact on the planet (less virgin material is now needed to package the same amount of material), our performance has been improved because we have eliminated $5,000 of annual surcharges and our people are very happy with the net result.

We have recently taken our waste diversion strategies to our West Coast factory in Los Angeles and have begun the process. Our firsy steps have reduced waste hauling by 20% and we are looking at reducing another 40% in the very near future. A very important principal that we learned at E4S is to celebrate each incremental success. We are certainly doing that out in California.

I hope that your event inspires others because together we will make a measurable difference. Please let me know if I can help. Take care.

Since establishing Deconstruction Management, Inc a few months ago, we are working to help the construction and development industry achieve zero waste and establish an industry for building material reuse. Is the initiative going to focus on both operational zero-waste like recycling and diversion programs as well as construction and demolition debris diversion? If so, save me a seat!
