Taylor's 2009-2010 "Off-All" Program

Last fiscal year Taylor diverted approximately 30,000 pounds of scrap lumber from local landfills by collaborating with local entities that use this scrap for thermo energy. While we will be continuing our collaboration with BeeDance to divert this scrap, we have employed a formal internal program to re-use a certain group of our lumber scrap ("off-all") for covered stock in our chair frames. By using "off-all" for covered stock, we will reduce our need to purchase virgin lumber and thus, play…See More

Taylor's 2009-2010 Waste Goals

When it comes to environmental stewardship, I am a big believer in transparency. Over the past several years, Taylor has made outstanding strides in our quest to reach zero manufacturing waste. Thanks to organizations like E4S and the Corporate Roundtable and Sustainability Network, we have been able to meet and network with many talented and passionate individuals that have helped us tremendously in this journey. Without their help and the education we have received by attending their…See More

What attracts you to the concept of zero waste?
It's the right thing to do for the environment and for our bottom line.
What is your organization doing to eliminate waste?
We're over the 90% mark. We are composting all of our sawdust and wood scraps, upcycling our leather scraps and recycling paper, cardboard, excess fabric, post consumer plastric and pop bottles/cans
What motivated you to join ZeroWasteNEO.org?
Learn best practices, Network with others, Find ways to save money, Find potential clients
What do you need to learn to be able to take action towards Zero Waste?
Attend more E4S meetings in Cleveland and Akron. I will need to continue networking with individuals that posses an expertise in the diversion of wastestreams.
Please describe your organization's waste reduction goals (i.e. zero waste by 2019).
Our goal for fiscal year 2009-2010 (July 1-June 30) at our Bedford, Ohio facility is to further reduce our net annual waste hauling costs from $1,000 to a profit of $1,000. This represents a $20,000 swing from potential waste hauling costs as compared to actual if we did not take this initiative. At other factory in Lynwood, CA where we just started our zero waste initiative, it is our goal to reduce our annual 2009-2010 waste hauling costs from $19,000 to less than $16,000. I expect our West Coast team to exceed this first goal and set the stage for a more aggressive one for next fiscal year.

Hi Jeff,
Thank you very much, I am enjoying job searching so far because I am learning so much about various organizations and businesses but I am sure I won't have that same outlook when it is close to graduation! Anyhow, Notorious would be a great word to describe my internship experience. I was very appreciative of all the opportunities offered!

It was nice to meet you over the summer, and I will keep in contact.

Hi Jeff,

Great work on the cardboard change with your leather supplier....thanks for sharing that on the site! Hopefully others will work with their suppliers to find similar triple bottom line benefits. Afterall, it is reduce....then reuse....then recycle!
