Creating less waste just makes sense. There are much better uses for our resources and money (better schools, healthcare, aging infrastructures, etc.) than figuring out what to do with all the trash we create. Less trash (waste) = less of an environmental problem.
What is your organization doing to eliminate waste?
Cleveland Metroparks Zoo has an extensive recycling program, which includes programs for the public to participate in and also operates a compost operation for organic wastes. Our Resource Management Committee is tasked with "studying and improving the ways that our resources are used, investigating innovative technologies, and recommending implementation strategies" that support the conservation initiatives and stewardship efforts of our organization.

A better understanding of what "Zero Waste" means will help in educating our employees on how to get to that goal.
Please describe your organization's waste reduction goals (i.e. zero waste by 2019).
We continue to look for recycling opportunites by source separating all materials in our waste stream. We are researching how best to expand our current composting operations. We have reduced vehicle fuel usage by limiting driving in the park during our busiest months, April through September.
