What attracts you to the concept of zero waste?

There is no concept of waste in nature. Everything that is waste to one organism is food to another. Imagine what we can learn from nature to eliminate waste from our lives?

What is your organization doing to eliminate waste?

E4S has goals surrounding zero waste. We compost all our food/organic waste using an outdoor compost and a worm bin. Our building recycles paper, plastic, bottles, cans and cardboard. We only have one waste basket in our office located in the common area.

What motivated you to join ZeroWasteNEO.org?

Learn best practices, Share resources, Network with others, Find ways to save money, Find potential clients

What do you need to learn to be able to take action towards Zero Waste?

How to engage organizations in concept of zero waste and what organizations are doing to get there. How can we share best practices to help all of us advance on our journey?

Please describe your organization's waste reduction goals (i.e. zero waste by 2019).

E4S has set a BHAG to be zero waste by 2010.

If your organization has set a zero waste goal, how do you plan to reach that goal?

We have a recycling program in our building, which we use for paper, cardboard, cans, plastic bottles and plastics #1 and #2. Plastics #3-7 are taken to the City of Cleveland drop off locations. For food scraps and napkins/tissues, we have a worm bin in our office and an outside compost pile. We try to eliminate to go materials from restaurants by bringing go cups and frequenting establishments that use recyclable packaging.

Waste Management Recycle America - Oakwood Village Facility

On a recent tour of the recycling facility at Oakwood Village, I learned what happens to the bulk of the recyclable materials from the 27 cities around the region. Built in 1993, WM Recycle America processes about 4000-5000 tons of recyclable materials every month. The facility handles single stream recycling, which allows participants to place all recyclables into one container. Automated sorting technology at Oakwood Village separates the material streams so they can be baled and remarketed.… Continue

Local Supermarket Starts Composting!

Heinen's, a locally owned and operated grocery chain with 17 stores, has partnered with Rosby to begin composting food scraps in its Mayfield Village, Middleburg Heights, and Brecksville stores. The program, which started last fall, has been successful and the company plans to continue to roll this out to its remaining stores. Heinen's is also looking at its entire waste stream for opportunities.

Working Towards Zero Waste: Local Leaders Share Their Success

Waste Management Composting Technology

Waste Management (WM) owns a landfill in Solon that no longer accepts municipal solid waste. Since 2001, Stouffer's, located nearby, has used methane gas from this landfill. This fuel source meets about 80% of Stouffer's processing and plant heating needs. WM uses a recovery, compression and treatment system to capture the methane.

Turtle Plastics - Recycling Byproducts Into Usable Goods

Tom Norton, President of Turtle Plastics in Lorain, OH knows a thing or two about recycling materials. I felt it was important as an industrial designer to gain an understanding of the entire life cycle of the "products" I design for a living. In this case we focused on corrugated temporary displays for retail. Was good to see the process, ask questions and generally hear from the recycler's perspective. Many of the materials we use in our displays has value but only at the manufacturing (i.e. bulk) level. Therefore it's important that we manage, from a design perspective, what goes into our displays. I have a follow up visit planned with one of our retail partners to gain insight into what happens at the retail level. Each of these investigations provides a new piece of the puzzle that will eventually lead to a clearer picture of the entire process. The goal being to provide clients with design solutions that are suitable throughout their life cycle. I get the feeling that by factoring in each step of the life cycle we'll turn out solutions that make more sense for everyone involved and we'll find new opportunities for real innovation, which is always desirable.

I had my local Buehler's Store in Brunswick save for me a stack of Campbell's soup corrugated boxes. I am working on a rendition of a Campbell's tomato soup can liken to Andy Warhol's. My version of course being three dimensional but utilizing the corrugated can cartons directly into the art piece. Always loved his art piece and I'm a perfectionist with graphics. Should be fun, I'll send a pic over once completed.

It is ironic that you wrote by email yesterday, as I was wondering if you had ever received my message, Thanks for taking the time to do so and I do appreciate the info obviously for this site as I am now a member...yeah! This is a wonderful venue to show my work, network, learn about what others are doing, etc. In Brunswick we have a "Green" committee that meets monthly. I'm not actually a member yet as having children can make for extra curricular activities difficult sometimes. You have to chose of course what fits in the schedule. I have however been a guest speaker at their events, attend meetings when I can and do keep in touch. One of the more enlightening things we did was take a field trip of sorts to our waste facility in Medina with the team. My kids went as well and we truly were impressed by it and learning about what happens to our waste. I bring up only as because I seen some of the pics from your WM trip as well. Thank you again for all, My best!
