Today was the first day of
Sustainable Cleveland 2019: Building an Economic Engine to Empower a Green City on a Blue Lake. The organizers of the 3-day event have made efforts to make this a near zero waste event. With over 600 participating, that's no small feat! In order to do this, they have engaged local businesses in the process, including:
•
Rosby Resource Recovery has a Class II composting facility in Independence where the compostable items from the summit will be processed into soil
•
Nature Friendly Products provided plates, cups, cutlery, food containers for box lunches, and bags for collection - all made from bio-based materials that will decompose in a commercial composting facility.
The results from day 1
While some compostable items found their way into the trash,
a dozen 96-gallon totes were filled with compostables and diverted from the landfill. Thanks to the forethought of the organizers and the infrastructure that is emerging in this region, this will be a near zero waste event!
Lots of talk from speakers about waste reduction and getting to zero.
